Quality assurance of surface treatment processes by finding critical levels of contaminants

Obiettivo

The amount of contaminants on a surface to be painted is critical for the quality of the surface protection. Too much of a contaminant, for instance oil, grease or salt, means shorter service life-time and thus increasing maintenance cost. More and more attention is paid to this, both by manufacturers and their customers. Today there seems to be a lack of knowledge about how much contaminants that can be accepted. For companies manufacturing coated products it would be valuable to offer the customers a product produced in a process where contaminants are controlled, a process which includes a quality control system based on knowledge about the effects of contaminants. The objective with the project is to develop quality control systems for some common surface treatment processes by finding critical levels of contaminants. Factors that are relevant are type of contaminant. coating. product. analysis technique and process. The results benefit the participating companies (SME:s) in the way that these companies can offer their customers a product or service produced according to the developed quality control system. Waterborne paints are generally more sensitive against contaminants like oil than traditional solvent-based paints, and since waterborne paint is a large product for the prime proposer the project results would increase the sales of waterborne paints.
