Comparison and optimisation of efficiencies of thin-film solar cells

Objective

General statistical versions of previously investigated thermodynamic models are to be developed on the basis of the Boltzmann transport equation. This microscopic treatment is expected to bring out the origin of thermodynamic irreversibilities, which are efficiency-limiting, in solar cells. Equations for fermions and bosons, covering electrons, holes, photons and phonons, will be developed and applied to thin-film heterojunctions. It is intended to elucidate also the effect of graded band gaps and the relationship between photothermal, photovoltaic and photochemical conversion. In this way this project will tie in with our thin-film programme.
