Processing and development of mixed-conducting oxide membranes

Objective

The main focus of the proposed research is on the ceramic processing and development of mixed-conducting oxide membranes for selective feeding of oxygen in methane upgrading schemes.
The prime selection of materials concerns p-type doped perovskite-type oxides (La,A)(Co,Fe)03 (A=Sr, Ca, Ba).
In order to obtain materials that can be employed for this application more research is needed that can be formulated in terms of the following objectives:

- optimization of the oxygen flux, thermal, chemical and
structural stability of abovementioned perovskite compositions.
- preparation of thin selected perovskite compositions on supported membranes using sol-gel techniques.

- application of sol-gel techniques to control microstructure and to develop dense perovskite ceramics with high and selective oxygen permeability.

The gained knowledge will provide new strategies for development of mixed conducting oxide membranes with improved performance characteristics, whereas the results will furter extend the scope of the JOULE II project 'Electrochemical activation of methane using solid oxide membranes'.
