Lithium Polymer batteries for electric vehicles: scale-up and process demonstration

Objective

The project JOU-CT92-0075 has the objective to demonstrate the feasability of combining Solid Polymer Electrolyte (SPE)-Technology with SWING (carbon based anode & lithium transition metal-oxide cathode) electrode technology. The present proposal will add new work packages to the areas of Electrolyte Materials Research and Cathode Materials Research.
Of the proposed cathode materials, LiMn204 (Manganese Spinel) is the most promising from a point of view of cost and evironmental impact. Recent results have shown that the capacity and reversibility during cycling of this material at room temperature in organic electrolytes is strongly dependent on preparation methods.Participant 04 will optimize preraration methods and improve stability of the Manganese Spinels for use with SPE at operating temperatures of up to 120°C. Synthesis will be scaled-up as required by the other tasks of this project.
Presently studied PEO-based SPes require fairly high (120°C) operating temperatures and show problems of stability at these temperatures when combined with the cathode material. In the existing project, the use of plasticizers for the PEO such as propylen carbonate and ethylen carbonate is planned in order to achieve operation at lower temperatures. In addition, part. 05 proposes to develop new SPes based on specific polymer blends with the objective to improve stability and increase conductivity thus reducing operating temperature.
