Objective
The transformation of Central and Eastern European countries challenges economic and social policy on the one hand and the capability of households and individuals to cope with these problems on the other hand. The proposed network aims to use knowledge of modern economic sociology, the new economics of institutions, the theory of social stratification and the welfare state and apply them to social problems. The new network intends to present and quantify the dynamics of the households' innovative adaptive or defensive reactions to dramatic changes and to assess their possible consequences for economic and social policy. Key research questions are formulated for the following fields; a) changes in labour market participation b) dynamics of earnings and household income distribution c) problems of vulnerability and poverty and d) social policy actions. The research project focuses on the individuals and the households as subjects and will be developed in a cross-national perspective using longitudinal micro data. It is planned to harmonize socio-economic data from central and Eastern countries and to integrate them into the PACO database which is under development within the Human Capital and Mobility Programme.
