Objective
Structural designs made of composite materials (industrial textiles and claddings) subject to tensile stresses with extreme demands on them such as: Component weight and volume minimisation, large surface area support-free roofing, corrosion resistance, fast assembly-/dismantling, time limits on use of structure, relocatability, ability to fold and convert, clear area boundaries, are traditionally designed manually and often models are hand built for testing and modification. This procedure is cost and time-intensive and only allows limited simulation possibilities.
The objective of the project is the development of a 3 dimensional CAD with Integrated Simulation system for MEMbrane materials in structural designs which are subject to tensile stresses. This permits the representation of building lines, terrain and environmental aspects, as well as the simulation of various demands, materials, conditions etc. and the behaviour of the building material though the integrated model system.
The integrated ISIMEM-system has achieved its goals. In tests within our offices and during a textile roof design workshop with novice users, considerable interest and excitement has been generated for the Learning and Design programs. The general response has been extremely favourable, with most users expressing an interest in obtaining both the LEARNING and DESIGN program systems. During 1995 we have begun distribution of Version 1 of the LEARNING program to about 100 architects and designers.
