Objective

The research project emanates from various partners within the textile industry, upstream of the clothing manufacturing industry (spinners, weavers, knitters, finishers), users of continuous yarns and members of the AUIFFASS (European Association of Users of Yarns of Man-made Fibres and of Natural Silk). These industrialists wish to dispose of continuously updated information retrieval system, which globally describes basic fabrics, both for fashion and totally new products, as appraised by the consumer,so as to be able to adjust innovations to end user expectations.
The aims of this research are:
-to characterise these properties of touch, comfort and appearance through targeted and representative sampling,
-to analyse them as a whole,
-to create a continuously updated, user-friendly information retrieval system, -to evaluate its efficiency first as an aid in decision taking in design, at all levels of the textile industry upstream of the clothing industry, -to ensure its distribution to the actors and partners associated with research and generally to clothing manufacturers, stylists and distributors, -to make it a lively tool for textile design,
-to transfer the methodology to other sectors of the textile industry. Success of the project relies on the representative nature of the samples, the pertinence of objective sensorial measurements and their analysis, the efficiency of the information retrieval system (simplicity, user-friendliness, speed), implementation of a short communication circuit for participants, wide access to the information retrieval system.
