Photocatalytic treatment of polluted water.

Objective

Treatwater International in Ireland and Puro Nederland, from the Netherlands, have identified a potential system for treating polluted water.

Semiconductor particles may be photo-excited to from electron donor sites (reducing) and electron acceptor sites (oxidising). By controlling the environment one or other property may predominate. For example, blocking holes by an electron donor reagent such as sulphide has greatly enhanced the reduction of carbon dioxide. Blocking the electron sites by an electron acceptor such as oxygen has facilitated the oxidation of chlorophenols.

The technique has great possibilities for the treatment of polluted water using sunlight as the photon source.
