Combining Cost and Comfort Benefits of Two Footwear Construction Methods

Objective

This project is aimed at developing a methodology for combining the sewn-in-sock method of shoe manufacturing with the stuck-on-sole process. The sewn-in-sock method offers benefits of increased comfort for the consumer as well as cost reduction through material saving. The stuck-on-sole method gives a flexible production capability which a majority of European shoe manufacturers currently use. Combining the two will give the combined benefits without significant capital investment.
The work programme requires that procedures and techniques are developed to overcome the technical problems of combining the two methods, namely the accurate location of the upper/insole seam and the achievement of a strong and consistent adhesive bond between upper and sole. Guidelines on choice of materials and on processing conditions will be part of the development activities.
