Objective
Damage in the form of shallow craters of grain surface loss from bovine hides (light spot and fleck) is a problem estimated currently to cost the European tanning industry 70-110 MECU annually through downgraded leather. In response to this widespread problem affecting the tanning industry the British Leather Confederation (BLC) and the Scottish Agricultural College (SAC) with the help co-operation of SMEs has linked the damage to infestations of biting and sucking lice on the live animal.
The aim of the proposed project is to improve significantly the raw material for the European tanning industry through an integrated approach to minimising the damage by establishing a practical programme of ectoparasite control. The research programme will involve investigation into the fundamental nature of the damage to hides and its response to treatment. Productivity and behaviourial changes associated with the ectoprarasite infestations will also be monitored for commercial incentives when implementing control programmes. Improved detection of grading of the hide damage during processing and the diminution of this damage will also be included as important short term means of reducing commercial losses.
