New process technology for cleaning heavily soiled work wear applying halogene free organic solvents

Objective

Washing of heavily soiled work wear will be mainly determined by the costs of waste water treatment and hazardeous waste disposal. Solvent treatments of the state of the art are not in line with necessary performance levels or future ecological requirements. The objective of the planned R&D work is to develop a new technology and machinery for work wear cleaning of low ecological impact and good performance based on a combination of solvent treatments by halogene free solvents and aqueous systems. It should be based on medium polarity solvents or azeotropes containing water and detergents either in a bi-phase system or in sequential treatments. The process techniques should be implemented in a way that hazardeous soils are totally removed from textiles into easily distillable fractions. An economic recovery of the solvent system is to be achieved under the premise of a high security standard, low VOC emissions, and minimum energy demand. Experiences and contacts in metal cleaning of the main proposer will be included in the work to achieve these aims. The project will be carried out under the support of companies in a vertical line including machine producers, chemical industry (solvent and detergent producers) of metrology and safety devices and textile cleaners.
The competitiveness of the (as a rule SME's) European cleaning machine industry and their suppliers thereby will be improved the world market as a consequence of increasing environmental regulations in the developed and border countries in relation to the Japanese and US suppliers. Additionally the market situation of textile rental companies will be improved in relation to the multinational trusts of the disposal industry.
