Applying statistical techniques to production control, development and product verification in welding consumable manufacture

Objective

Welding consumables (electrodes, tubular wires, solid wires, fluxes) are made for a wide range of applications and to many different alloy types and specifications. Whilst some are supplied to specific compositional ranges, most are used in applications where mechanical or other properties are required in the weld deposit. Chemical analysis is widely used to provide production control yet few correlations exist to relate product chemical analysis with weld metal properties. Those that have been prepared are complex to use and are restricted in the material types to which they apply and in their scope. A broadening of the range of applicable materials and properties and a simpler approach would enable better production control and improved product verification methodologies to be used.
The project objectives are to develop a broad range of correlations and will involve the statistical analysis of a large volume of data drawn from both production and laboratory tests. The reliability of production chemical analysis is an essential prerequisite to the development and appplication of correlation equations. For this reason, the project will also evaluate the reliability of chemical analyses performed by manufacturers and present the results statistically. A store of samples will be established to enable reliability studies to be continued long after the completion of this project.
Benefits accruing to the participants will include the availability of correlations and statistical data that with further development can be trimmed for use in individual manufacturing units which will enable product weld deposit characteristics to be predicted and monitored. The availa-bility of such data will enhance existing production control methods, minimise waste and improve product reliability.
