New welding technology for high temperature plant components.

Objective

The development of new welding technology for advanced plant materials could significantly improve the competitiveness of European SME manufacturers of high temperature power generation and process plant components. However, the SME's are unable to exploit this market opportunity individually, primarily because of lack of R&D facilities and insufficient funding for major developments of this kind. The overall aim of the work is to enable European SME high temperature plant component manufacturers to improve their competitiveness in world markets through the collaborative development of new welding technology. The work will centre around two novel welding techniques with the specific objectives of firstly developing the techniques for innovative application to advanced high temperature plant and secondly integrating the two techniques into a single new welding process. The findings will be directly applicable to a range of industrial sectors that utilise high temperature plant including power generation, petrochemical and process plant, steel-making, paper/pulp production and other manufacturing industry. The resulting major economic benefit for the SME Partners will be considerably increased sales through increased competitiveness in the major worldwide market for high temperature plant components.
