Objective
Reducing energy consumption in the existing building of the Ecole Normale Superieure in Paris, which is heated by a collective hot water system. This building has two wings of 6 levels each, the control system is installed in 1 wing (used as boarding school), the other being the reference (used as laboratories).
Energy savings between 7 to 10% (26 MWh/year) are expected mainly by integrating the costless heat gains in the control system.
The measurements on the wing equipped with the new regulator give a consumption of 114,5 MWh for the period Oct.87-April 88 to be compared to 150,7 MWh for the same wing with the "heating curve" regulator normally used; these figures give a saving of 24 % exceeding largely the 10 % expected.
Based on 1988 price, exclusive tax, of 0,12 FF/kWh for the natural gas, the return time of investment is O,7 year for a standard climate year. The new regulator is well accepted by the users.
The control system is based on an algorithm which, from the sole measurements of the hot water temperatures (supply-return) at the boilers, computes (1) the thermal and behaviour parameters of the building and of the hot water system, and (2) the inside temperatures. These data enable the control system to consider the costless heat gains by intervening at the mixing valves on the hot water distribution and/or on the boilers.
Only measurement equipment and interfaces directly related to the proposed control system are installed in the building. Complementary a microprocessor for data collection and evaluation is installed elsewhere; it is connected with the building through a modem and a telephone line. The project includes 4 phases :
1 : Preparation and installation of equipment for monitoring.
2 : Preparation and installation of equipment for control of the heating system.
3 : Monitoring (heating season 87/88)
4 : Analysis and report.
