EXPERIMENTAL HARVESTING AND PYROLYSIS CONVERSION INTO BIOFUEL OF BROOM (GINESTRA-SPARTIUM JUNCEUM), SUGAR SORGHUM AND OTHER ENERGY CROPS.

Objective

THE AIM OF THIS RESEARCH IS TO MAKE SOME EXPERIMENTAL FULL SCALE TRIALS ON HARVESTING AND ON PYROLYSIS CONVERSION OF SOME ENERGY CROPS.

THE CROPPING FIELDS ARE LOCATED AT AZIENDA AGRICOLA BALDELLI CELOZZI, CIVITELLA D'ARNO, PERUGIA; THE PYROLYSIS PLANT AT APA, RAIANO, L'AQUILA.

THE CROPS WERE SELECTED FOR THEIR INTERESTING BEHAVIOUR TO INDUCE BIOFUELS. ROBINIA E GINESTRA ARE VERY FAST SRIC (SHORT ROTATION INTENSIVE CULTURE) WOODY CROPS AND THEIR AVERAGE CALORIC POWER IS RATHER HEIGHT (3.800 KCAL/KG). THE CONVERSION INTO BIOFUELS CAN BE MADE BY PYROLYSIS TREATMENT OF DRY OR MOIST CHIPS OF THE SIZE SUITABLE FOR THE FEEDING OF THE PYROLYSIS PLANT. THE SWEET SORGHUM HAS A VERY FAST AND GREAT YIELD AND COULD BE PROCESSED TO BIOFUEL PRODUCTION AS HARVESTED OR AS BAGASSE AFTER ETHANOL CONVERSION.

THE ROBINIA AND GINESTRA HARVESTING TRIALS WERE MADE BY CONVENTIONAL SYSTEMS : CUTTING BY MOTOR SAW OR SCRUB CLEARING MACHINE, HANDLING BY MAN. ALSO BY HAND IT WAS MADE THE ENSUING STEP OF LOADING TREES ON THE CHIPPING MACHINE. THIS MACHINE IS A SPECIFIC ONE FOR SMALL TREES, WITH 2 ROTATIVE KNIFES. THE CHIPPING MACHINE IS CONNECTED TO A TRACTOR BY A SUITABLE POWER TAKE-OFF. ALL THE HARVESTING TRIALS WERE MADE WITH THE ASSISTANCE OF THE PROF. S. BALDINI OF THE ISTITUTO DEL LEGNO DI FIRENZE.

THE CHIPS WERE STORED INTO A SMALL SOLAR DRIER AND ALL PARAMETERS INTERESTING THE DRYING PROCESS ARE AUTOMATICALLY GATHERED.

THE TRANSPORT OF CHIPS TO RAIANO PYROLYSIS PLANT WERE MADE BY TRACKS SUITABLE TO WORK ON THE ROAD SYSTEM EXISTING ON THE EXPERIMENTAL CROPPING AREA.

THE SWEET SORGHUM, CULTIVATED IN PERUGIA, WAS SEND TO RAIANO IN SMALL PIECES RAW AS HARVESTED. THE SWEET SORGHUM DRIED BAGASSE WAS SEND TO RAIANO BY THE FIRM CA.VI.RO OF FAENZA THAT WORKS IN ETHANOL CONVERSION.
