THE AIM OF THIS WORK IS TO IDENTIFY A DONOR SOLVENT AND FRIEDEL-CRAFT CATALYST SYSTEM WHICH WILL GIVE IMPROVED YIELD OF LIQUID FUELS FROM DIRECT LIQUEFACTION OF COAL.
The use of tetralin, and similar hydrogen donor solvents, in the hydroconversion of coal to liquid fuels is well known and is important in large scale coal conversion processes. In an attempt to further reduce the severity of the reaction conditions generally used, the overall performances of new donor solvents (ketones or esters) in the presence of typical Lewis acid catalysts are being investigated. The study has been undertaken to develop a better understanding of the role of the Lewis acid catalyst in promoting the direct liquefaction of coal at subpryrolysis temperatures.
THE PROJECT WILL BE EXECUTED UNDER SEPARATE BUT COMPLEMENTARY CONTRACTS WITH POLITECNICO DI MILANO AND STAZIONE SPERIMENTALE I COMBUSTIBILI.POLITECNICO DI MILANO WILL CARRY OUT A SERIES OF COAL LIQUEFACTION EXPERIMENTS IN A BATCH REACTOR.FIVE DONOR SOLVENTS OF THE TYPE RCOOR'AND FIVE LEWIS ACID CATALYSTS,DERIVATIVES OF B,FE,AL,SB,SN OR TI,WILL BE TESTED.IN THESE RUNS THE SOLVENT TO COAL RATIO WILL BE VARIED AND CATALYSIS WILL BE PERFORMED UNDER BOTH HETEROGENEOUS AND HOMOGENEOUS CONDITIONS.AFTER PRELIMINARY SCREENING,TESTS INVOLVING PREFERRED SYSTEMS WILL BE CARRIED OUT WITH VARYING RESIDENCE TIME TO INVESTIGATE THE KINETICS OF LIQUEFACTION.
PREPARATION AND ANALYSIS OF THE COAL AS WELL AS THE VARIOUS ANALYSES OF THE LIQUEFACTION PRODUCTS WILL BE PERFORMED BY STAZIONE SPERIMENTALE IN A COMPLEMENTARY BUT MUCH SMALLER PROJECT.GASEOUS PRODUCTS WILL BE ANALYSED BY GC;SOLID RESIDUES WILL BE ANALYSED FOR C,H,S,N AND ASH;LIQUID PRODUCTS WILL BE FRACTIONATED AND ANALYSED ACCORDING TO STANDARD PRACTICES.
