Objective
THE PREDICTION OF SURFACE TEMPERATURE, MOISTURE AND RELATED CONDITIONS OVER CONTINENTS IS AN IMPORTANT PROBLEM IN CLIMATE SIMULATION. IT IS THEREFORE PROPOSED TO DESIGN AN ECONOMIC SOIL MODEL FOR INCORPORATION IN AN EXISTING GENERAL CIRCULATION MODEL OF THE ATMOSPHERE. IF HARMONIC FORCING IS APPLIED THE SURFACE TEMEPRATURE SHALLY BE REPRODUCED WITH CORRECT AMPLITUDES AND PHASE SHIFTS IN TWO SPECIFIED FREQUENCIES (ANNUAL AND DAILY PERIODS). THE MODEL WILL ALSO INCLUDE A TREATMENT OF SOIL MOISTURE EN DSNOW COVER.
AFTER INCORPORATION INTO THE CIRCULATION MODEL THE COMPLETE SYSTEM WILL BE TESTED, NECESSARY PARAMETER ADAPTATION MADE AND THE RESULTS COMPARED WITH OBSERVATIONS WHERE POSSIBLE. FOR THIS PURPOSE AVAILABLE DIAGNOSTIC ROUTINES FOR THE EVALUATION OF SIMULATED ATMOSPHERIC AND SURFACE CONDITIONS HAVE TO BE EXTENDED.
