Objective
TO ESTABLISH EXPERIMENTALLY THE BEST CONDITIONS FOR CLEANING ROCKS AND HARBOUR INSTALLATIONS AND TO CHECK THE TOXICITY OF CLEANING PRODUCTS FOR AQUATIC ORGANISMS.
AN ARTIFICIAL SHORELINE, MADE OF ROCKS AND MASONRY WALLS, WILL BE USED AS A TEST SITE EXPOSED TO SEA AND OIL MIXTURES AS THOSE OCCURRING AFTER OIL SPILLS. A VARIETY OF CLEANING PRODUCTS WILL BE TRIED IN DIFFERENT CONDITIONS TO COMPARE THEIR EFFICIENCY FOR REMOVING THE OIL, TAKING INTO ACCOUNT THE TEMPERATURE, THE THICHNESS AND THE AGE OF THE OIL SLICK, THE CLEANING METHODS.
ALSO LABORATORY TESTS WILL BE ACHIEVED TO ASSESS THE TOXICITY OF REMOVED OIL AND CLEANING COMPOUNDS FOR AQUATIC ORGANISMS, BECAUSE VERY EFFICIENT DISPERSANTS CANNOT BE USED IF THEY WOULD KILL AQUATIC LIFE AFTER CLEAN UP.
THIS SHOULD ESTABLISH AN OPERATIONAL PROCEDURE TO CHOOSE AND TO USE CLEANING PRODUCTS ADAPTED TO THE LOCAL SITUATION, WITHOUT HARMING THE ECOSYSTEMS.
WITHIN A COMPLEMENTARY CONTRACT , ENV 606 F, THE CLEANING OF BEACHES IS INVESTIGATED.
