Objective
ASSESSMENT OF THE OVERALL RANGE AND NATURE OF WATER FLUCTUATIONS IN INTERTIDAL SEDIMENTS.
TO FIND THE DEGREE OF CORRESPONDENCE BETWEEN A CLASSIFICATION OF SHORES USING WATER TABLE AND DRAINAGE.
1. INVESTIGATION OF REASONS FOR ASYMMETRY OF WATER TABLE VERSUS TIME GRAPHS
REASONS FOR THE ASYMMETRIES ALREADY DISCOVERED AT THE SANDY HAVEN AND ANGLE BAY SITES NEAR PEMBROKE (SW WALES) WILL BE INVESTIGATED BY COMPARING RESULTS OBTAINED WITH THE PERFORATED PIPE TECHNIQUE, E.G. THE BURYING OF A VERTICAL SUCCESSION OF ELECTRIC "DIPPERS" IN THE SEDIMENTS, AND VISUAL OBSERVATION DOWN THE SIDES OF A LARGER DIAMETER HOLE.
2. INVESTIGATION OF WATER TABLE MOVEMENTS IN A COMPREHENSIVE RANGE OF SHORE TYPES
A LARGE NUMBER (CA.20) OF SITES WILL BE SELECTED TO COVER A WIDE RANGE OF SEDIMENT TYPES, SHORE SLOPES AND HEIGHT ABOVE CHART DATUM. AT EACH SITE WATER TABLE LEVELS WILL BE MONITORED AT SEVERAL SUB-SITES OVER A TIDAL CYCLE DURING DIFFERENT SEASONS AND WEATHER CONDITIONS. FOR EACH SITE THE FOLLOWING WILL BE RECORDED:
- HEIGHT ABOVE CHART DATUM
- SHORE PROFILE FROM LOW WATER SPRING TO HIGH WATER SPRING TIDE MARK
- SEDIMENT TYPE
- AS FAR AS IS PRACTICABLE, SEDIMENT DEPTH AND VERTICAL STRATIFICATION OF SEDIMENT TYPES
- A "VISUAL ASSESSMENT" OF THE SHORE AS MIGHT BE USED FOR OIL SPILL RESPONSE PLANNING
- RUN-OFF OF SEEPS FROM LAND BASED SOURCES (IF ANY)
- POSITION OF CREEKS AND CHANNELS RELATIVE TO SITE.
DISCREPANCIES ARISING BETWEEN THE "VISUAL ASSESSMENT" OF THE SHORE FOR OIL AS PREDICTED FROM WATER TABLE AND DRAINAGE DATA WILL BE HIGHLIGHTED.
