Objective
TO ESTABLISH THE CAUSAL RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN ATMOSPHERIC POLLUTION AND THE RATE OF DECAY OF MATERIALS USED ON HISTORIC BUILDINGS AND MONUMENTS.
THE RESEARCH PROGRAMME CONSISTS OF FOUR MAIN COURSES OF ACTION:
1. THE PREPARATION OF A COMPREHENSIVE REVIEW OF ALL PUBLICATIONS AND WORKS RELATING TO THIS FIELD OF STUDY. THIS REVIEW WILL TAKE THE FORM OF A CATALOGUED AND INDEXED PORT-FOLIO OF REFERENCE WORKS THAT ARE OF VALUE TO ACADEMIC RESEARCHERS, ARCHITECTS, PLANNERS AND LEGISLATORS. IT IS INTENDED THAT THIS REVIEW WILL BE CONTINUOUSLY MAINTAINED AND UP-DATED IN THE FUTURE SO THAT IT WILL, IN EFFECT, BECOME THE CORE OF A COMPREHENSIVE INFORMATION NETWORK.
2. THE MEASURING AND DOCUMENTATION OF A SELECTED NUMBER OF HISTORIC BUILDINGS IN POLLUTED AND NON-POLLUTED ENVIRONMENTS AND THE EXAMINATION OF SAMPLE BUILDINGS CLEANED AND/OR TREATED DURING THE PREVIOUS DECADE.
3. THE DESIGN OF SPECIAL MORTARS AND 'ARTIFICIAL STONES' AND THE SELECTION OF PRESERVATIVE TREATMENTS AND COMPOUNDS AND CLEANING PROCESSES FOR DETAILED EXAMINATION AS APPLIED TO THE MATERIALS UNDER STUDY.
4. A PROGRAMME OF DATA COLLECTION BASED ON FIELD AND LABORATORY MEASUREMENTS OF ATMOSPHERIC POLLUTION (MACRO AND MICRO-CLIMATE) AND MECHANICAL AND CHEMICAL DECOMPOSITION OF THE FOLLOWING MATERIALS: GRANITE, LIMESTONE, PORTLAND STONE, SAND STONE, AND OF MATERIALS USED FOR REPAIRING STONE
