Objective
TO DEVELOP A SERIES OF RELIABLE METHODS, WHETHER BASED ON NUMERICAL MODELLING OR ON PHYSICAL MODELLING, TO PREDICT THE EFFECTS OF LARGE FLAMES OR FIRES ON THE ENVIRONMENT.
DMI'S SPECIFIC TASK WITHIN THE PROJECT WILL BE TO DEVELOP PROCEDURES ACCORDING TO WHICH RELIABLE WIND-TUNNEL SIMULATIONS WITH COLD BUT BUOYANT GASES OF FULL-SCALE TORCH FIRES CAN BE CARRIED OUT. A DIRECT COMPARISON BETWEEN THIS TECHNIQUE AND THE WIND-TUNNEL TECHNIQUE INCLUDING REAL FLAMES (DEVELOPED BY TNO) WILL BE ACCOMPLISHED BY DMI.
DURING THE FIRST STAGE OF THE PROJECT SCALING RULES FOR WIND-TUNNEL MODELLING WILL BE DERIVED FROM THEORETICAL ANALYSIS, ASSISTANCE WILL BE GIVEN TO THE SELECTION OF THE SITUATIONS TO BE STUDIED WITHIN THE PROJECT, MEASURING EQUIPMENT FOR THE WIND-TUNNEL EXPERIMENTS WILL BE SELECTED AND WIND-TUNNEL TESTS FOR THE IDEALIZED SITUATIONS WITHOUT OBSTACLES WILL BE PERFORMED. AT THE END OF THE FIRST STAGE DATA OBTAINED FROM THE WIND-TUNNEL TESTS WILL BE EVALUATED AGAINST FIELD DATA AND DATA FROM NUMERICAL ANALYSIS.
DURING THE SECOND STAGE OF THE PROJECT, DEPENDING ON THE RESULTS FROM THE FIRST STAGE, THE MODELLING TECHNIQUE WILL BE ADJUSTED. AFTERWARDS MORE COMPLEX SITUATIONS WITH SIMPLE OBSTACLES WILL BE STUDIED IN THE WIND TUNNEL.
A FINAL REPORT ON THE DMI ACTIVITIES WILL BE PRODUCED. FURTHER, DMI WILL CONTRIBUTE TO THE TEXT OF AN EXECUTIVE SUMMARY ON THE TOTAL JOINT PROJECT, BASED ON THE REPORTS OF THE OTHER PARTNERS. ALSO RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE MODELLING OF FIRES IN WIND TUNNELS WILL BE GENERATED.
