MAITRISE DE L'ESCA ET RESPECT DE L'ENVIRONNEMENT

Objective

Background

ESCA is a disease of vinestock wood which has been existing for a long time but which tends to develop in the European vineyard. It attacks the stockwood of which it causes death in the more or less distant future in the case of the slow form and much more quickly for the striking down form. The only effective pesticide the working method of which is not known is sodium arsenite discovered in 1926.

This compound, currently essential, is however toxic for the man and the environment and, despite precautions of use which limit the residues in environment, it will be prohibited in the long term. It is already the case in Italy. As soon as the treatment stops, a development of the disease can be observed. Along with the vineyard survival, dieback diseases as ESCA threaten the qualitative potential of the wines.

The objective of this project is to provide scientific and technical bases necessary for the development of new environmentally friendly methods to control the disease, and to diffuse them, in order to eliminate in the long term the use of sodium arsenite in the vineyard.

Short description of the project

The implementation of this programme will include:

- an identification of the fungi involved in the syndrome of ESCA

- the creation of tools, in particular molecular identification to understand and follow the development of the disease

- to carry out preliminary tests, to prepare new more environmentally friendly
treatment methods, one chemical with the development of a substitute to sodium
arsenite more neutral for the environment, and a biotechnological method based on
natural protection system of the plant.
