Ziel
This project is concerned with the development of experimental techniques for preparing and characterising well-defined oxide surfaces which may then be used as substrates for fundamental studies of the surface chemistry of bulk and dispersed oxides and also for the preparation of model supported metal heterogeneous catalysts. In particular, the work will utilise the unique optical characteristics of supported epitaxial oxide layers to carry out investigations of adsorption and reaction on such surfaces by IR spectroscopy. These studies will be complemented by investigation using a range of standard surface analytical techniques (XPS, UPS, LEED, TPRS, LEIS) as well as reactive scattering measurements to evaluate the surface chemical reactivity of such systems. The studies will aim to particulary address the influence (electronic and structural) of the underlying substrate on the oxide layer's reactivity and any synergistic effects afforded by the close proximity of particulate metal and oxide surface phases.
