Excitable spiral waves and vortices dynamic in liquid crystals

Objetivo

This project concerns the study of spiral waves and vortices dynamic in confined liquid crystal systems.
Interesting confined systems are nematic globules, i.e. nematic drops sandwiched between two glass plates. By a suitable choice of the anchoring conditions, the topology imposes a point defect or vortex in the center of the globule. In a rotating magnetic field, a 3D spiral waves is formed around this vortex.
The phase winding dynamic behaviour under an electric field, which tune the 3D distortion character into 2D, will be measured and compared with a 2D Landau-Ginzburg model. For a high spiral wave density, vortices pairs nucleation is expected. The orbital states, the chaotic and the relaxation dynamics of these vortices will be measured and analyzed. Surface vortex are obtained in nematic drop on solid substrate. The anchoring dependent dynamic of the spiral waves around these surfaces vortices will be studied. Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact)
This fellowship will allow me to improve in my study of dynamical systems which I began during my graduate studies (Laurea). Its benefits will be to learn about both experimental and theoretical techniques of patterns formation in non-linear dynamical systems by using my experience in the liquid crystal systems.
