Marine Geodynamic Division


Principal characteristics of the facility and of the support offered to users:
The Marine Geodynamics Department of GEOMAR, Kiel, Germany, concentrates its research activities on studying the dynamic and tectonic processes that shape the Earth's crust and upper mantle. Special emphasis is placed on surveys of oceanic plate boundaries and continental margins. Most of the research is accomplished using seismic data, which offer the best resolution of subsurface structure. The seismic data are supplemented with swath bathymetry and potential field data. State-of-the-art imaging is supported by the development of seismic data processing techniques using wave theory and statistical methods.
This program is implemented by operating an advanced seismic processing system, centred around a CRAY YMP-EL98, two older CONVEX (C3410 and C3220) supercomputers, and a network of more than 20 workstations including SUN servers (SPARC 1000E and Ultrasparc 2). The system incorporates peripherals necessary for geophysical data. Software includes a 2-D/3-D seismic processing package developed by industry and not available in any other academic institution in Europe. The facility also offers the use of prestack depth migration/focusing analysis seismic software not available in academia. In addition, several in-house 2-D/3-D depth migration algorithms are implemented in the supercomputers. Experienced personnel are available for guidance through the data analysis and processing. GEOMAR has also created a pool (currently 20 instruments, with additional instruments expected soon) of modern digital high capacity ocean bottom hydrophones (OBH) for data acquisition. More than 500 deployments with an unprecedented success rate of 99% were made. This proposal offers free access to the processing system and the OBH. A total of four surveys using the OBH and up to three scientists at any time (2 on average) working on the processing system can be accommodated during the three years covered by this proposal, which extends the ongoing contract ERBCHGECT930025. This, however, does not include the use of the OBH instruments. Quantity of access being offered and number of users who may benefit: Free access to Ocean Bottom Hydrophone (OBH) system for 4 cruises (approximately 300 deployments). Unlimited access to the processing and interpretation system for a total of 72 man-months.
