As maintenance painting is considered to be expensive, painting companies experience growing competition by the 'do it yourself' market. This trend has negative effects on the preservation of buildings, on national economies, on safety, but also on the environment, as professionals have learned how to deal with products with respect for the ecology. So painting companies have to look for strong means of competitiveness. Labour is responsible for at least 80% of the total of companies costs. In this respect the increase of productivity and the decrease of lost working time are top priorities. Work related absenteeism is a sincere problem; repetitive movements (RSI) are the main cause of work related absenteeism. This project aims to develop innovative hand tools for painters that increase productivity and decrease the lost working time by health complaints. The approach for hand tool design that will be applied, was in another sector of industry developed and tested, in the Euro-band tool-project (Program of Brite/EuRam, projectBE96-3735). As painting firms, manufacturers of hand tools and ergonomists collaborate, this project has a reliable basis to accomplish the goals.
