Objective
Cardboard tubes have great potential for structural and component uses in the construction industry; they are light, very strong and 100% recyclable. A British- Italian consortium proposes to make use of an Exploratory Award to carry out the necessary research for a CO-OPERATIVE research project to fulfill the potential of cardboard tubes in this area. Additional information on structural properties, waterproofing and connection methods is required. ECOCARD will build up a database of existing uses of cardboard tubes, and research the feasibility of new designs and processes. It will design, manufacture and evaluate proto-types for uses such as columns, partilioning and temporary housing, and provide test results for inclusion of cardboard in construction standards. Additional SMEs will be sought among manufacturers, designers and end users to strengthen the partnership.
