DEVELOPMENT OF THE LOW ENTHALPY GEOTHERMAL FIELD OF NESTOS AREA

Objetivo

To use geothermal energy for industrial users in the Kavala area (Macedonia) and for agricultural purposes (greenhouses, fish-farming, corndryer). Later extensions are possible to the airport and the nearby village of Eratino. The estimated production (100-150 m3/h) at 80-90 deg. C will be tapped in conglomerate formations and karstic marble lying at 800-1000 m. Expected salinity about 9 g/l prevent water discharge to sea and impose reinjection well drilling. Feasibility study will establish the geothermal water use after full evaluation of the reservoir potential.
A primary energy saving of 3300 TOE/y is expected with a corresponding payback of 6 years.
The initial target made of breccias revealed no porous formations and the deepening of the well in the metamorphic basement altered and fractured did not showed any geothermal reservoir. Higher in the sedimentary formations the evaluation realized with Density and Neutron logs indicate a possible good reservoir made of sandstones between 525-650m.
Since 1983, IGME proceeded in an exploration program of the area, taking into account data from the deep DEP/EKY's exploration wells. This program included 14 shallow wells which confirmed the geothermal interest although there is no serious thermal manifestation on surface. The maximum recorded temperature was 70 deg. C at 545 m depth. Moreover, two geoelectrial and three gravity profiles of the area were made during 1985. IGME proposed a deep production well near Eratino village, where the gradients measured in the shallow wells were the greatest. The reservoir expected to be met, either the conglomerates just above the basement, either inside the basement made of marbles. Estimated temperature will be 80 deg. C
The well has been drilled from November 1988 to January 1989 to a final depth of 1377 m. A 13" 3/8 and a 9" 5/8 casings cemented at 360 and 837 m. Geological sampling and logging gave up very low estimated permeability for the reservoir formations but it was decided to perform an air lift pumping test. The test carried out by means of 5" pipes has produced only 2-3 m3/h. Due to the poor result the well was abandoned and cement plugged between 800 and 870 m.
