Semantic foundations of distributed computation

Objective

The 'Foundations of Computation' (FoC) group of the University of Sussex invites applications for Marie Curie Fellowships from PhD students to undertake part of their studies at FoC. The group offers doctoral training in the area of semantic foundations of distributed computing, with a focus on theories addressing the challenging demands of the internet-based information environment. FoC's research strategy is centered on the development of new foundational theories underpinning the design of programming languages and paradigms for global computing. Work at FoC focuses on object-based languages and on mobile computation. It includes
(a) game theoretic models and operational techniques for (concurrent) objects,
(b) axiomatic semantics for OO languages,
(c) calculi for distributed systems where properties such as security, locality, failure, reliability can be studied, and
(d) implementation of the distributed language Dpi and its security model. Fellows will be integral part of FoC and take active part in research activity, weekly meetings, and seminar series. They will elect a scientific supervisor and be assigned a mentor to help them settle in. Applicants must be nationals of a member or associated State of the EU (excl. the UK), currently undertaking their doctoral studies, and have a solid theoretical background in semantics and formal methods. Fellows will receive a contribution of 1,200 euro per month from the EU Commission. The fellowships will be tenable for a maximum of 12 months.
