Objective
More and more Europeans are working in small and medium-sized firms (SMEs) where the trade union side of social partnership is largely absent. Yet their work experiences are only poorly understood. SMALL will study SME employee relations and in particular the trade union potential in relation to five major themes: gender equality, health and safety, work organisation and working time, payment methods, and employee status. SMALL's rigorous comparative character enables it to go beyond both narrow focus SME research or studies that conclude by noting the huge variety of experience across Europe. At SMALL's heart is the transnational interchange of researchers, enabling a highly unified study to take place. This method lets us make a detailed comparative reading of a key social reality. Not only will the socio-economic SME knowledge base be increased, but also SMALL will highlight best social dialogue practices in SMEs and how they are achieved.
