Objective
To use a simplified modular design of Kaplan turbine, which is also easy to construct and install, at an old mill site whilst ensuring that the historic nature of the site is preserved. The expected energy output from this project is 1,602,700 kWh annually.
The contractor has experienced problems with difficult ground conditions, two floods, which destroyed the dam, and silting up of the tail race. First trials with the power house equipment took place after connection to the public supply authority, EdF.
Precautionary measures are being installed to avoid future flood damage but negotiations have not yet been completed with the main fishing society on the provision of suitable fish passes.
An axial flow Kaplan turbine, with modular components for ease of maintenance, is installed in an old mill site. Care has been taken with the design of the installation to retain the historic features of the original installation by using existing buildings to house much of the electrical equipment, by integrating the tail race into its surroundings, and by ensuring that upstream plant has minimal environmental impact. Two fish passes are also incorporated in the design.
