Evaluation of genetic consequences of radiation and chemical contamination in human populations in kazakhstan by means of a spectrum of different tests

Objectif

The project will determine using a variety of genetic tests, whether people living income regions of Kazakhstan contaminated by radioactivity or chemical products display higher genetic load than those living in uncontaminated regions. The tests to be carried on cultured blood lymphocytes cover a wide spectrum from unstable chromosome aberrations, sister chromatic exchanges, micronuclei, stable translocations (deter-monition by the FISH method), mutations of the p53 gene, to the determination of the adaptive response of reacting to a geotaxis insult and the intrinsic sensitivity of cells to a geotaxis agent. Information will also be collected on the exposure history of the persons studied, including the presence of potentially confounding factors and present levels of heavy metals, radioactive contamination, etc. It is hoped that these results can be correlated to the health status of the population and have predictive value
