Precise IT intends to contribute to the optimisation of intermodal terminal operations, addressing those operational problems that can be put in relation to the position of ITUs and/or vehicles on the terminal.
Building on already existing and assessed technologies, the main objective is to set-up and test a demonstration system for the automatic location of ITUs and vehicles inside intermodal terminal areas. The innovative aspect of the Project is that several technologies, namely GPS, acoustic, laser, radio frequency identification (RF/ID) tags, will be investigated for their use in this particular field of application.
The overall architecture of the system will be the following:
1. a set of sensors dedicated to determining the location of ITUs and vehicles.
2. a mobile control unit installed on each vehicle which collects all information from the various sensors and makes them available for transmission.
3. a data transmission network which connects the mobile control units and the Position Information Server.
4. the Position Information Server which is the control and monitoring system that manages all position information in a standard database format, interfaced on one side with the Terminal Operator's Data Management System through a standard interface, on the other side with the data transmission network and fixed sensor devices.
Modularity is a key issue in this project. Thanks to the fact that the Project considers several technologies, it will be possible to identify different solutions based on various technological mixes depending on the kind of the terminal. The final results will allow European terminal operators to identify the most suitable technical solution for their own terminal.
