Objective
The aim of the project is to demonstrate at the site of Hoogovens Ijmuiden (integrated steelworks in the Netherlands) the feasibility of the use of an innovative guide vane controlled medium pressure oxygen compressor and adherent adapted Oxygen Management Strategy System (OMSS). By introducing flexible compression capacity at medium pressure energy will be saved by reduction the amount of high pressure oxygen to be compressed and hence by the decrease of oxygen blow off. Moreover, by adapting the adherent OMSS additional energy saving will be realised by producing oxygen more close to the actual demand.L%
The compressor was made ready for use. Starting the compressor was a success and compressor is into production.
Application of a flexible flow from an automatically guide vane controlled gear type medium pressure (8 barg) oxygen compressor in close co-operation with an oxygen pressure forecast model combined with a related oxygen compressor set-up model. Compared with a single shaft compressor the required energy is substantially less. At present a total average amount of 60.000 Nm3 per hour of pure oxygen is required for pig iron production (for enrichment of the blast) and for steel making (for the basic oxygen converter process). The oxygen is produced by a number of air separation units and is compressed to two different pressure levels within the oxygen production facilities, which are owned and operated by the company Hoek Loos (and in the past by Linde AG, recently mother company of Hoek Loos).
Up till now the medium pressure oxygen is being compressed by means of a fixed flow noncontrollable compressor and/or of reduced from the high pressure oxygen grid. Performing this project itwill become possible to achieve a more flexible way of compressing the required oxygen amount and therefore to save energy by a more energy efficient way of compressing oxygen and less waste of energy by reducing the blow off of compressed oxygen. The flexible compressor (rated from 17.000 to 32.000 Nm3 per hour) will be a state of the art guide vane controlled medium pressure oxygen compressor, which will be manufactured by the German supplier DEMAG, the third proposer of this project. The application of a guide vane controlled medium pressure oxygen compressor (8 barg) would be an innovation. Additional to the controllable compressor modifications to the Oxygen Management Strategy System will be effected, by using a simulation model of the oxygen grid. This modified Oxygen Management Strategy System will offer the possibility to use the enhanced flexibility of the compression facilities to its potential.
