Objective
The proposed project plans to carry out a complex ecological evaluation of the current state of natural environment and biological resources of Baikal Region and the study of antropogenic impact on ecological systems using newest remote sensing and Geographic Information System (GIS) techniques.
The current state of natural environment and its pollution can be comprehensively shown on ecological maps. In this regard the issue of ecological prognosis becomes important as it will allow to evaluate the impact on environment of various artificial and natural phenomena and objects including technogenic pollution.
These problems are very acute for Lake Baikal region having long severe winters and the native population with low resistibility to toxicants and infectious deseases.
The mentioned aims of the project can be achieved based on the permanently active centre of ecological monitoring.
All of the above aims and objectives of the project will be targeted torwards rational utilization and conservation of nature recourses of Lake Baikal as a World Heritage Site.
