Transport of pollutants through small-polluted rivers to the sea

Objective

The main object of this project is the study of the transport of pollutants through small-polluted rivers to the sea. Three reverine systems have been chosen for this research: River Kubistskali in Georgia, Sperchios river in Greece and river Lagares in Spain. Nutrients, trace metals and petroleum Hydrocarbons have to be studied. During this project, a total of eight different samplings shall take place. Apart from in situ physical and chemical measurements, water and sediment samples shall be analysed by the participating laboratories, depending on the capabilities and the experience of each scientific team.
The collaboration of laboratories of various research activities, but with significant experience and well-defined capability in carrying out environmental researches, in the study of estuarine systems, shall be of great significance.
Moreover, the information that shall be obtained, shall be very useful, both under scientific and management point of view, as it shall enrich our knowledge and also shall lead to the improvement of the management of the studied rivers. It must be noticed that there is a lack of information about the pollution of small rivers and the mechanisms that occur during the transport of pollutants.
Such studies have to be interdisciplinary in order to be successful. A lot of different techniques and scientific methods for field and laboratory work have to be used which leads to an extensive exchange of scientific knowledge between the participating laboratories.
In this studies some of the more modern and special equipment, that are available in the participating laboratories, shall be used. The modifications of the methods and equipment, for the purposes of this study, may be important for their improvement and their capability to be used in similar researches. New scientists shall be familiar with advanced techniques. The identification of the environmental significance of transport mechanisms of pollutants in small estuaries shall lead to guidelines for their protection, for the monitoring of the neighbouring marine environment and for the sustainable management of the relevant areas. The results of the study shall help local authorities to improve the management of the coastal areas of their responsibility.
