Objective
The main goal of this project is development and construction of the muon chambers for the CMS End Cap Muon System and for the LHCb Muon System. These two LHC detectors have complementary tasks. The CMS detector is aimed mainly at the Higgs search and at the "new physics" beyond the Standard Model, while the LHCb detector will concentrate on the detailed studies of the CP-violation in B-meson decays.
The chamber technologies in both Muon Systems are similar (wire chambers with cathode and/or anode read out). They use the same gas mixtures, have similar front-end electronics, and have similar ageing properties. Also, they can be assembled and tested using similar tooling and test equipment. These arguments are the justification for the joint LHCb/CMS Muon Systems project.
The proponents of this proposal will perform design, construction and tests of the muon chamber prototypes including the preproduction prototypes and will prepare the technology for mass production of these chambers. They will develop the front-end electronics for the LHCb muon chambers and will design and construct the High Voltage Monitor for the CMS and LHCb Muon Systems. They will perform optimization of the gas mixture used in the muon chambers.
An important part of the programme is design, construction, and tests of the prototype of the Track Finding Processor for the Level-1 trigger in the CMS End Cap Muon System. This project will require a sophisticated technology based on FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) logic. A conceptional design of this processor has been already developed by the proponents of this proposal.
Another task will be development of the pre-trigger logic for the Level-0 trigger in the LHCb Muon System.
All participating teams will take an active part in Monte Carlo simulations of the physics processes to be studied with the help of the CMS and LHCb Muon Groups.
This joint programme is formulated in 10 tasks.
The teams participating in this INTAS project are members of the CMS and LHCb collaborations. They have rich experience in development of the tracking chambers, read out electronics and trigger systems for various large international projects that serve as a firm base for the realization of the formulated tasks.
