Objective
Agriculture in the NIS, as any other sector of the economy, is currently in the process of far-reaching transformation. These historical disruptures have completely changed the meat economy of the whole region. The formerly centralized meat market of the Former Soviet Union is now divided into a number of separate markets in the independent states but these do not yet function properly. Traditional trade flows are interrupted, surplus and deficit regions co-exist and there is an overall downtrend of meat production in the main production areas. Meat demand and consumption in all the states have changed tremendously in the aftermath of reform measures in the economy at large. Meat processing is still dominated by the monopolistic structures of the former planning system.
The objective of this research project is to analyse the restructuring process in the meat economy of the NIS. This includes a thorough investigation of changes in the production system, of the relocation of production in a competitive framework, and of the modernization of the marketing system and processing enterprises. Estimates of future supply and demand on a regional basis will be carried out and should provide a basis for a re-evaluation of meat trade flows and the organisation of inter-regional and international trade in meat and meat products.
Emphasis in the research project will first of all be placed on the necessary changes in the production and marketing system. This is because sound analysis and improvement of the state of knowledge in these areas is of immediate relevance for the necessary policy adjustments.
