Documentation and editing of scientific ethnographic film material in Russian archives

Objective

Russian archives in Moscow and provincial cities contain a great deal of old valuable ethnographic film material. Based on similar experiences from other current projects, a co-operation between the CNIT/Moscow State University and the Russian State Humanitarian University on the one hand, and the Nordic Anthropological Film Association and the Institut für den Wissenschaftlichen Film, Göttingen, on the other, in a first 12-month-phase aims at documenting relevant film material in several archives, cataloguing the material according to modern standards and analysing selected parts of the material from an anthropological point of view. In a later phase selected material will be edited in a limited number of ethnographic films for future research and education both in Russia and the western academic world.

The project, as a paradigm for both, aims to establish long term co-operation between Russian and western anthropologists and preserving source material for future academic research.
