Improving and testing hard materials used for cutting tools

Objective

New high-performance cutting tools are needed for new kinds of reinforced alloys and superalloys. A great variety of boron nitride compounds is known and some of them have unique physical characteristics applicable in the construction of high-efficiency cutting tools.

This project will develop superhard ceramic cutting tool materials on the basis of research and field experience accumulated at the Institute for Superhard Materials in Kiev and at the Kharkov Polytechnical University. This project will study peculiarities of the cutting process with new boron nitride modifications to increase mechanical processing efficiency and production quality. The project will develop realistic recommendations on specifications and explore the launch of the new materials on west European markets.
