Objective
Due to advances in epitaxial growth and doping, and due to the observation of blue-green laser emission from electrically pumped devices, a worldwide vivid renaissance is seen for research on II-VI semiconductors. The partners in this project will grow various types of II-VI epilayers and superlattices to investigate experimentally and theoretically their properties, especially the excitons.
The main aspects concern their linear and non-linear optical properties under high excitation, the resulting lasing including the physical origin of the laser processes and their properties, such as threshold or temperature dependence, the dynamics of the excitons from their phase-relaxation time T2 to their lifetime T1 and, last but not least, the influence of localization on the above properties, which arises from well width fluctuations, e.g. in superlattices and/or from alloy disorder, e.g. in barriers or wells. The co-operation between the partners, which has existed for several years, will help essentially to tackle this ambitious programme sucessfully, which none of the partners could do alone.
