Objective
Interactions between electromagnetic and mechanical fields are of both theoretical and practical interest. Many modern technologies such as plasma machines and levitating fast trains, use thin-walled structural members made of electroconductive materials acting in intense electromagnetic fields. Important dynamic problems of current-carrying shells in external magnetic fields remain to be investigated.
This research project will bring together internationally known contributors to both structural mechanics in particular, the refined theory of shells developed by Ambartsumyan and co-workers in Armenia, and to continuum mechanics of electromagnetic bodies.
The following research activities will be undertaken: the calculation of transverse shears based on the refined theory of shells and plates; investigating the effects of finite electric conductivity, perfect conductivity, and superconductivity on vibrational and buckling characteristics of structural members; investigating the effects of physical non-linearities especially when the structural members are composite structures made of isolating and electroconductive components such as multilayers.
Members of the Armenian team will visit their Western European partners to strengthen the collaboration and carry out necessary bibliographical and numerical research.
