Development of a strategy for socio-economical and health conditions in a small rural community in Karakalpakistan, severely affected by the Aral Sea disaster

Objective

This project aims to elaborate a coherent strategy for better management of the environment in the selected communities and the improvement of socio-economic conditions of the affected population. This strategy should constitute a pattern for future environmental behaviour in the whole region. For the realisation of the project, emphasis will be given to the close collaboration with Uzbek and Karakalpak governmental and/or non-governmental organisations and to the active participation of the population concerned. This will serve as a model for other communities in the region and enhance the environmental consciousness and behaviour of the population.

The main objectives of the project can be subdivided as follows: rehabilitation of the water supply system, in order to guarantee the quality and quantity of supplied water and the maintenance of this system over the long term; demonstration and dissemination of community-based low cost water supply; definition of an optimal policy in agriculture, focused on a sustained exploitation of available soils and appropriate use of fertilisers; setting in use new Uzbek technologies for bio-purification of potable water; education and sensitisation of the communities and local authorities with regard to the problems of the environment; increasing the awareness of the Uzbek population to the risks and dangers of ecological negligence and ignorance; a serialisation of the project in the other communities; estimation of needs (financial, human resources) in order to advance and extend the project; and inclusion of the project in the frame of the World Bank programme for the Aral Sea rehabilitation.
