Non-thermal plasmas for gas treatment: the construction of a network

Objective

Plasmas are used in huge varieties and for many purposes. They can be created by electrical discharges. Several types of electrical discharges for non-thermal plasmas have been a topic of research for more than 20 years. Most of this important research is focused on the more fundamental aspects of the discharges. For a good understanding of plasma applications it is necessary to do research on the fundamental similarities and differences of the discharges and on how a discharge can be optimized for a specific purpose. In order to achieve these goals, several subjects are to be pursued by the participants in this network.

These subjects will result in a project plan to be discussed at an inaugural meeting in July 1995. This plan will explain exactly the specific tasks each institute will have, which results are to be expected and when a steering committee will evaluate these results in semi-annual meetings.

The network project will lead to: possibilities for the institutes in the NIS to continue their research on non-thermal plasmas for gas treatment at the previous high level; the promotion of well-trained and experienced young researchers, especially in the institutes of the NIS, as a result of their visits abroad; the creation of a well-established core network of institutes monitoring regularly the similarities, differences and possibilities for optimization of the discharge technologies. This core network should be the basis for an extended and continued exchange of scientific data between the partners and other interested institutes in the field of non-thermal plasmas for gas treatment; a scientific basis for the further development of non-thermal plasma applications for gas treatment; and arranging for international publication of the results.
