Fundamental problems of ion-ion interaction: electron rearrangement in inelastic collisions

Objective

Ion-ion interaction plays a key role in high temperature laboratory and astrophysical plasma and differs greatly from the interactions involving neutral atoms. The experiments are inherently technically difficult and, at the present time, only a limited number of reactions have been studied. However, recent progress in experimental techniques involving crossed or merged ion beams and coincidence methods has now opened this field up for systematic and detailed investigations.

The main scientific goal of the project is to gain insight into fundamental rearrangement processes occurring in inelastic ion-ion collisions, e.g. charge transfer, ionisation, mutual neutralisation, associative and transfer ionisation. The pattern and mechanisms of these processes will be studied by identifying at the same time the reaction products of two interacting ions which have definite initial states.
