Objective
The project addresses the problem of the long-term estimation of tsunami risk (tsunami-zoning) for the Mediterranean region by means of:
the compilation of a comprehensive historical tsunami catalogue for this region embedded inside the Integrated Tsunami Database;
the development of a new methodology for the calculation of tsunami risk for areas with a low-level seismicity and the lack of historical data.
The verification and demonstration of the applicability of this methodology will be made by the preliminary classification of the Mediterranean coast in terms of degree of tsunami danger and by obtaining detailed risk estimates for several selected sites of the Mediterranean region and the coasts of the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea, taking into account the possible combination of tsunamis with other sea level anomalies.
Another innovation will be the exploration of the potential risk of cosmogenic tsunamis by means of the definition of criteria for their recognition (implying theoretical modeling), and of the search for historical evidence and traces of the asteroid-water impact structures in the region.
The project considers the above problems in a regional way, representing an attempt for a joint systematic approach involving international and interdisciplinary co-operation of four research groups (two groups in Russia, one in Italy and one in Spain) having expertise in different and complementary aspects of the tsunami problem.
Among the main outputs of the project will be the Integrated Tsunami Database for the Mediterranean region implemented as a PC-based software package containing the comprehensive historical tsunami catalogue for the last 3000 years. This data and software will be made available to the tsunami community in European countries and the New Independent States (NIS). The new methodology of tsunami-zoning and the obtained estimates of tsunami risk for some parts of the Mediterranean coast will be published in scientific journals.
