Wireless supporting agricultural and forestry information systems

Objective

The project aims to improve the access to existing information related to agriculture and forest management by government institutions, private sector companies, NGOs and general public. In particular, it will develop user-friendly data formats and facilitate access to database, data exchange and feedback between database administrators and their institutional, business and individual users. Different ways for data transmission, including wireless, will be tested. The proposal is based on the Information and Data Centres (IDC) for agriculture and forestry.

Objectives:
The project aims to implement advanced wireless communications into multimedia systems and services for agriculture and forest administrations to improve access to information. The project will demonstrate the improved effectiveness of agriculture and forest data and information access as compared to existing systems. The whole project is oriented on the connection of GIS platforms with wireless communication. The communication possibilities via Internet solution and special tools for wireless communication will be compared. On one hand communication via standard commercial equipment such as GSM (WAP, SMS) and special equipment.

The six pilot cases will be addressed: Non-profit forestry information systems, Non-profit agriculture information systems, Forestry consultancy, information systems, Agriculture consultancy information systems, Forest management information systems, Farming information systems

Work description:
The project aims to implement advanced wireless communications into multimedia systems and services for agriculture and forest administrations and other relevant bodies. The next goal is to improve access to agriculture and forest information by citizens and businesses and to facilitate contacts, exchanges and feedback between administrations and third parties, i.e. citizens, institutions and businesses. The project will demonstrate the improved effectiveness of agriculture and forest data and information access as compared to existing systems.

Specific tasks to be undertaken under the proposed project are the following ones:
Main information requirements for agricultural and forest management and administration (mostly connected with the funding and controlling system) will be identified.
Appropriate existing GIS tools will be selected and implemented (and/or adapted) on the Open-GIS platform, aiming to assure their compatibility with the coming new generation of computer hardware.
The data interoperability will be tested on a sample set of digital agriculture, forest and environment maps in connection with wireless communication.
A decision supporting systems (DSS) based on the agriculture and forest application will be developed to use as an example.
Internet wireless GIS link will be developed and tested and Intranet established.
Establishment of an advisory agriculture and forest GIS&RS (Remote Service) service will be proposed.
The system effectiveness will be tested and demonstrated.
The project will address two groups of potential users: data providers and data users.
A software package will be addressed to data providers, which will be able to be implemented in different conditions and different countries. This system will be based on Internet technology combined with wireless communication.
