E-learning for microelectronic manufacturing

Objective

The project E-LIMM aims at addressing the shortage of highly skilled industrial staff in the microelectronics industry by creating high-quality training and learning courses, modules and schemes. The microelectronics industry as an essential part of the ICT requires highly qualified staff for strengthening Europe in a world-wide competition. This demands qualification and continuous re-qualification by training programmes for operators, technicians, engineers, freshmen, and managers. The main topics are process technology, factory automation and operation, process and metrology equipment as well as environment, safety and health. The training and learning material for the microelectronics skills will be prepared for integration into web-based training platforms targeting at a platform-independent structure. With the proposed project, the development of skills and knowledge share will be considerably strengthened.

OBJECTIVES
The general objectives of the E-LIMM project are to address the shortage of highly skilled staff in the microelectronics manufacturing industry and to strengthen the European industry for microelectronics as part of the Information and Communication Technology in a world-wide competition. Highly skilled employees with excellent knowledge of business processes and manufacturing procedures are vital to the success of any company. To achieve these objectives, the qualification and re-qualification of the industrial staffs' skills will be improved by the development of high-quality web-based training and learning courses especially adapted for the application on the production site for microelectronics manufacturing and also tailored for different target groups. The training and learning material will cover all important manufacturing topics like factory operation and automation, process and metrology equipment, process technology as well as environment, safety and health.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK
Training material which is divided into the workpackages process technology, fab operation and automation, process and metrology equipment, as well as environment, safety and health will be prepared with input and under the guidance of the users from industry and will be integrated into a web-based training platform. There will be four leading centres for the main topics: Process Technology: IMEC, Factory Automation and Operation: MW Zander, Process Metrology and Equipment: IIS-B, Environment, Safety and Health: NMRC. Each of the work packages will be structured in different phases:
a) defining the content and evaluation of existing material;
b) creating new material;
c) testing and reviewing of the training material;
d) first user training.

These phases are co-ordinated by the leading centres and workpackage leaders in co-operation with the other partners. In parallel, there will be an additional workpackage Integration concentrating on the didactics preparation, the interface management and the practical application of the training material on a web-based platform. The material developed should be open for integration into different commercially available and proprietary platforms of the project partners. Emphasis has to be put also on didactics and a suitable media mix worked out in the comprehensive workpackage integration. The final course material will be implemented in one or two web-based platforms specified by the industrial partners. With the outcome of this project, the target groups freshmen, operators, technicians, engineers, and managers gain fundamental knowledge and skills in the area of semiconductor manufacturing. As a result, the qualification and re-qualification of industrial staff will be more comprehensive, more efficient, faster and better for the needs of the semiconductor manufacturing industry. After project finishing, the consortium is looking for a partner or company which will up-date and manage the material on a commercial basis.
