Teletraining platform

Objective

In order to become a commodity for European society/economy, mobile solutions must provide five main characteristics: ubiquity, transparency, fundamentality (i.e. the user simply can't live without it), universality and value governance. This new concept of mobility will be hereinafter called X-MOB (eXtreme Mobility). The goal of the project is to give an answer to X-MOB through the development of a platform so-called XMAP (eXtreme Mobility Application Platform) aimed to host mobile applications with the following main features: multi-device/channel, multi-network, multi-user, multi-service (ASP-based model), multi-country (federated model), open-standards based (Java/J2EE compliant).XMAP benefits and outputs will be validated through the development of two vertical applications (healthcare and logistics) involving 2G, 2.5G 3G, satellite and multiple different devices types.

OBJECTIVES
Objective I: To develop the XMAP platform with support for:
(1) network independence,
(2) device/channel independence,
(3) user customisation,
(4) ASP-oriented vertical services,
(5) reusable horizontal services (security, federated ASP model, multi-event billing collector, etc.),
(6) workflow engine,
(7) B2Bi third-parties services integration (e.g. GSM/GPS location),
(8) mobile content management,
(9) open standards (Java, J2EE, XML, JMS, JDBC, etc.).

Objective II: To validate XMAP through the development of two vertical pilots (Healthcare and Logistics), including real-world testing with GPRS+Roaming, UMTS, WLAN, Satellite and multiple multi-sensorial devices (Car, HHT, PDA, 2G/2.5G/3G mobile phones, medical mobile device, IDTV, webTV, PC).

Objective III: To pave the way to cross-sector / cross-country exploitation as the Consortium envisions inmediate European exploitation of the results of the project (including new users, countries and services) following the ASP approach.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK
The project work-plan identifies three main phases:
Phase 1
- Definition of the solution:
-This phase 1 starts with the preparation of the project: structure and organisation of the project, methodology that will be applied. All procedures and tools used in the project (and specially the project portal) will be developed.
-Based on the identification of both AS-IS and TO-BE states and the definition of the migration path, a Master Plan will be generated, which will guide the work for the two following phases of the project.

Phase 2
- Development of the solution:
-In phase 2 of the project, efforts are concentrated on the one hand to build the XMAP platform and on the other hand to develop the pilot applications and prototypes for the Logistics and Healthcare sectors.
-Building the XMAP platform: One of the main issues that characterizes the environment and framework presented, is Mobility. Thus, the Extreme Mobile Application Platform (formerly ASP Platform) will be implemented having in mind all the issues and complexities that mobility implies: security, reliability, bandwidth, latency and also multi-channel and multi-network issues.
-Development of Pilot applications and prototypes: Based on the requirements established by the user side of the consortium, two prototypes will be developed as vertical applications.

Phase 3
- Validation of the solution:
-R&D efforts converge during the last phase with the validation by the consortium (and especially by user partners) of the achieved results and deliverables.
-All generic outputs of previous WP will be particularised and adapted to two concrete industrial pilots involving all the user partners, the emergency Healthcare pilot and the Logistics pilot.
-These pilots will contribute to validate the results of the project in terms of real-world applicability of project outcomes and deliverables. Training of the industrial end-users involved will also be addressed in each pilot.
