Development of a next generation large HAWT

Objectif

The state of development on which this project is builds is embodied in the WEG 400 turbine. Currently going into commercial production at 36m diameter/400 kW size, this turbine features full span pitch controlled wood composite blades, with electro servo actuated, self feathering control system, a two-bladed teetered hub rotor, an integral drive train and "soft" structural dynamics.
The objectives of the work being undertaken in this project are to: 1. Prepare the detailed design for the manufacture of a twobladed horizontal axis wind turbine suited to sites with annual mean wind speeds at hub height in the range 7.5 to 8.5 :/s, with targeted energy cost in windfarm production of 0.06 ECU/kMh (assuming 8% real rate of return and 20 year life), with amws of 8 m/s at 45m hub height.
2. Manufacture, install and commission a prototype machine to this design. 3. Trial operation of the prototype for a period of 1 year.

Optimisation in size of this next generation large HAWT, to achieve minimum energy production cost in commercial wind farm applications, is based on the design development of a 1 MW, 50 metre diameter turbine, undertaken by WEG in 1991. Assessment of the cost of energy based on the costings of the 400 kW and 1 MW turbines, and on the results of studies undertaken to establish both the balance of plant costs as well as the operation and maintenance costs associated with both sizes of turbine, showed that the cost of energy from windfarms located at specific sites, using either the 400 kXW or 1 MW turbines was approximately the same. At sites where significant wind shear existed (power low coefficient > 0.1 say), the larger machines achieved lower cost of energy.
